The Freeze on Crops

With the recent severity of freezing weather conditions in Mexico, Texas, and Florida, there continues to be numerous product challenges related to fresh produce product procurement. If this wasn’t bad enough, throw in pounding local rains coupled with record low temperatures in the Coachella and Central Valley growing districts. Towards the first part of last week, we thought we were possibly going to see a little relief and then the market shot up even further than we were expecting. We are seeing just about every vegetable commodity being affected some way or another by these horrific weather conditions and some products sadly tripling in costs. The produce industry challenges that lie ahead will include suspect product quality as well as unbelievable cost implications for approximately another 30 days, if not longer.
