Get in High Gear with Craft Beer

posted on October 30th, 2012 by Geoff Nicoll

With football season heating up, the weather cooling and fall settling in, it is an ideal time to change gears and acquaint yourself with some of the finer craft beers available. The beer culture has grown leaps and bounds over the last few decades, and what once was dominated by a few big brewers has been liberated by a myriad of crafty, adventurous and successful artisan brewers. The range of flavors is as dynamic as the personalities that savor them, from wheat beers, to sours, pales, India pales, stouts and porters, there is a beer for every taste, dish and season. And we are proud purveyors of local partners from Santa Barbara to San Diego, and a great many cities in between, as well as dozens of impressive craft kettle jockeys peppered throughout this spectacular barley loving country of ours. It can be said, every great city has a brewery, though many serve only on draft. And for those of you looking for international flair, we also offer many of the finest from  Bavaria… Read More

With approximately 70% of the immune system dwelling within the digestive system, these microflora have a significant effect on the body’s overall wellness. Stress, the natural aging process, changes in diet, and antibiotics can significantly deplete beneficial intestinal microflora. What can you do to repopulate your intestine with… Read More

Bard Valley Medjool Dates

posted on October 24th, 2012 by Keith Tsuchiyama

Bard Valley lies along a beautiful, sun-lit corner of the Southwest, its palm groves watered by the Lower Colorado River as it makes its way to the Gulf of California. It was here, among the date groves lovingly cultivated by our growers, that the Medjool date achieved its truest perfection. Thanks to this unique micro-climate, Bard Valley Natural Delights are arguably the world's finest Medjool date available. Warmed by the ever present sun, nourished by the high water table and proximity to the Colorado River, there is no better place in the world to grow this timeless delicacy. Dates are considered the oldest cultivated fruit in the world, dating (pun intended) back to 6000 B.C. Of the many varieties harvested, it was the Medjool they crowned the fruit of kings, the king of dates. For years, only royalty and honored guests indulged in its luxurious sweetness, unparalleled complexity of flavor, and creamy flesh. Commoners, meanwhile, settled for a more common variety of date… Read More

The Triple Crown of Meat

posted on October 11th, 2012 by Rick Stidham

While Miguel Cabrera and the entire Mid West Region of the United States wait to find out if the Detroit Tigers baseball star will win the eluted “Triple Crown” of major league accolades, we out here on the West Coast have something that they simply do not have. Ok, maybe it’s not quite on the same scale as an award that has not been given since before I was born, but did you know that beef Tri Tip Roasts are not readily available in the rest of the country.  In fact, if you were to travel any to those regions, very few butchers have ever even heard of this particular cut. The Tri Tip is a highly marbled cut that can be roasted whole, bar-b-qued whole, or cut into steaks and grilled.  Either way you choose, this cut will cook off extremely well because of the extreme amount of marble content within the meat.  Believe it or not, there are only approximately 5 pounds of Tri Tip produced within each animal!  Not a whole lot considering the average steer weights 1,300… Read More

Francis Coppola Votre Sante Chardonnay

posted on October 11th, 2012 by Michael Cristillo

Opening Scene: Francis Ford Coppola’s paternal grandmother, Maria Zasa, was born in Tunisia, a French territory at that time. He would fondly recall the French songs she would sing, and also her toast when about to sip a glass of wine, “À votre santé”, meaning ‘to your health’. In Maria Zasa's honor, and to pay tribute to family traditions, Coppola winery created a Chardonnay appropriately called, Votre Sante. 2nd Act: This white wine offers a lovely balance between the delicate perfume of peaches, lemons, and spiced pears along with luscious flavors of apples, pineapple, and toasted vanilla on the clean finish. Half of the fruit was fermented in stainless steel, the remaining half aged in French oak barrels. Partial malo-lactic fermentation produces a creamy mouth feel, but does not take away from the focused, mineral nuanced mid palate that makes this Chardonnay both a great match for seafood and poultry dishes, but to enjoy on its own. 3rd Act: This wine sells at the… Read More
