Clean Out Your Freezers – Hatch Chile 2013

posted on July 31st, 2013 by John Savidan

hatch chile roastingIt’s that time of year again! Join us for our 5th annual Hatch Chile roasting season with Melissa’s Produce at Bristol Farms! Year-round, we celebrate many well deserving foods and drinks, but nothing comes close to our beloved Hatch Chile! There is no chile like it in this world; Hatch Chiles yield the best flavor of any chile variety, are grown in our neighboring Southwest, and are only available for a short period each year. So, keep your eyes out; the season officially starts August 7th at Bristol Farms!

Authentic New Mexican Hatch Chiles are a favorite Southwestern chile. These chiles are named after the original growing area in Hatch, New Mexico. Chefs say that the intense sunlight and cool nights in this valley result in a uniquely flavored chile. The valley, which stretches along the Rio Grande’s southern-most bend before crossing into Texas and Mexico, is covered with row after row of green leafy Hatch chile plants for most of the summer. These chiles have a meaty flesh and mild-medium heat.

hatch chile recipesIn all of New Mexico, no other chile is prized more than this variety which grows in the Mesilla Valley, just north of Las Cruces. The hot days and cool nights in this area give this chile a unique flavor, making it ideal for use in Chile Con Queso, Chile Rellenos, and Chile Verde. But, don’t stop there…try roasting and using them in salads, soups, stews, dips, and sandwiches.

Leading up to our main live roasting events, Bristol Farms and Melissa’s Produce meet for a Hatch Chile summit meeting to plan for these events, develop and taste delicious recipes, all to ensure we provide the best experience for our customers time and time again. We tasted some amazing recipes, which we will be sharing with you soon, but just to give you an idea: Hatch Chile Guacamole & Salsa, Hatch Chile Deviled Eggs, Hatch Chile Dutch Yellow Potato Salad, Hatch & Baby Heirloom Tomato Salad with Grilled Corn, Hatch Cornbread & Cookies, Hatch Spiced Ginger Ale, and the list goes on.

Like every year at Bristol Farms, we will be holding live roasts outside of select stores! These are great events that we invite all customers to. Stop by, order a case of Hatch Chiles and watch them being roasted, fresh, right before your eyes…and nose! The scent is amazing!! Not to mention all the product we will be sampling in-store; try our Hatch Chile Cream Cheese, Hatch Chile Cornbread and cookies, sausages, potato salad, and much more! This is truly one of our best celebrations and you will not want to miss it.
