Why Are Our Peaches So Sweet?
Let us introduce you to the refractometer! Say what?! The refractometer measures the sugar level in soft fruits and can tell you whether the peach you are about to bite into is at its prime eating, or if you need to wait on it. This saves you from biting into an off-putting, flavorless fruit only to leave you disappointed. Neat, huh? A drop of fruit juice on a refractometer lens is all that is needed to measure plant sugars and acid ratios – also known as brix levels. Higher brix levels usually equate to a much more flavorful, aromatic, sweeter, and juicier piece of fruit.
Brix levels are a reliable indicator of direct farming practices, soil fertility, as well as the fruit’s ripening potential. According to our Summeripe peach growers, higher brix leveled fruit contains more vitamins and minerals than lower calibrated fruit. We work closely with our growers to ensure that our peaches are picked at their optimal sugar levels prior to being packed. Leaving fruit on the trees longer ensures that each piece of fruit gets all it needs from Mother Nature before reaching you.
