Tips for Holiday Entertaining

posted on December 8th, 2014 by Melinda Race

partyHoliday entertaining comes in all shapes and forms, and while the elaborate celebrations can be a fun change of pace, there’s so much more to seasonal entertaining than those “Big Show” evenings. In fact, the first images that pop in my mind when I hear “holiday entertaining” are intricately styled buffet tables or gold sparkling everything. I also see smaller gatherings with close friends and family in a comfortable and festive environment, including great conversation, good wine, and some holiday platters. This kind of gathering is very manageable amidst crazy holiday schedules and can even come together in the form of an impromptu idea.  That is why I am really excited to share our menu with you and let you know we can make it simple, beautiful, and yummy!

Platters of crudité, fresh fruit baskets, European cheese platters, eight layer dips, and an international satay platter are a small selection of what we can do.  So, if you need to take one item to the party or you want to provide the entire layout for your guests in your home, Bristol Farms Catering can be a great support to making this an easy endeavor.  Did I mention Bacon Wrapped Date Rumaki, Tequila Roasted Shrimp, and Brandied Blue cheese and Pear Crostinis?  Just to name a couple more.

Here are a couple of party tips I’d like to share with you, our special Bristol Farms customers: a good smell in the air is an unconscious cue to everyone that they’re expected, that something good is in store for them, and that they’re going to be taken care of. Sometimes I simmer hot apple cider on the stove, and walk around the house with the pan, letting the mist and scent go all over the house.

candleThe minute people walk through the door, I want them to feel enveloped. Of course, the smell of a warming appetizer or a freshly baked cake will do it, but on days when I want to fix up a speedy, effortless festive fragrance, I delve into my stash of great oil candles. At this time of year, my favorite has to be Stella Mare Cranberry Tangerine Holiday Classic candles, with its almost tranquil scent. It just makes your guests know they are in the right place.

I always have something chilling in the refrigerator or iced in the freezer so I can serve a cocktail at a moment’s notice, ready to be poured.

The best way to make your guests feel welcome is to make sure you’re the first person they see when they walk in.  Greet each guest warmly and really see how they are doing.  Good hosts make sure to prepare everything in advance so they can be guests at their own party.

I hope you can put some of these tips to good use while entertaining this year.
