New! Camel Milk from Desert Farms
posted on March 26th, 2015 by Roger Arechiga
Guess what day it is! Well, it doesn’t have to be hump day to enjoy a fresh glass of Camel milk at Bristol Farms. Fresh Dairy has always been a staple at Bristol Farms, and this last year we met the good folks at Desert Farms and were introduced to their 100% Natural Camel Milk. It is a delicious drink of pure goodness. The taste is slightly sweet, creamy, and always refreshing!
Milk is the heart of Desert Farms’ business, so it’s taken seriously. The milk has to taste great, but Desert Farms also strives to buy from farmers who look after their workers, herds, and the environment. The milk is sourced from US camel farmers only, of all types and sizes (large groups and tiny family farms) with an average herd of 6 camels.
Their farmers are asked to use “Good Manufacturing Practices” and abide by fair minimum standards to improve their social and environmental performance year after year. Desert Farms’ strategy is to work with the farmers and help them to get there.
About Camel’s Milk
Camel milk tastes just like milk because it is milk! It does have a distinctive taste – slightly salty, some say, but always deliciously smooth, refreshing and fulfilling. People are surprised when they first drink it, because they don’t know what to expect. Then they say, “Hey, it’s just like milk.” And not only do they like it, their kids will drink it too! Desert Farms’ camel milk is light, sweet and clean with a fresh taste. It might differ a little from farmer to farmer depending on the local camel diet and the stage of lactation. There is nothing added and nothing removed. And farms conduct regular lab testing for bacteria and pathogens before packaging.
Desert Farms gets its camel milk from the first milking of the day. It is then bottled and labeled right on the farm, within hours, in small batches to ensure the delicate camel milk is not exposed to contamination. There are no delays in transport or storage, which means it is at its peak of perfection. The camel milk is not and will never be shipped to a third-party contractor for bottling. They try to limit the number of people dealing with their products to ensure freshness and purity.
No Added Hormones
Desert Farms’ camel milk contains no added hormones and comes from camels that are all grass-fed with non-GMO feed. No rBST, rBGH, and GMO free.* The result of these processes means customers get the freshest and most natural camel milk. It is exactly what natural food consumers and those looking for healthy food choices for their families are hoping to find.
All the camels are pasture-raised and eat a complex diet of hay, grass, and alfalfa pellets. Much of the year, the camels harvest their own feed from the farms’ pastures, choosing different feed depending on the weather, the camels health, the land on the farm, how close the camel is to giving birth, and the time of year. During the winter months when the grass is frozen in the Midwest, the farmers provide their camels with stored forage or homegrown alfalfa pellets. Depending on the farmer and the situation, farmers may include organic oats.
Desert Farms does not homogenize their Camel Milk because they believe that milk should be consumed in the most natural state possible. Non-homogenization allows our products to maintain its natural sweet flavor and smooth texture. Chefs actually recommend using non-homogenized dairy products as ingredients to make the best dairy based foods.
