Everything’s Better with Butter

First you start with JaM and then you add a little Butter. Well that’s how it began for John and Michelle Truchard (JaM is their initials), who launched a small project in 2009 that was geared to getting rich luscious wines in the hands of thirsty patrons for under $20. The field was crowded, but John’s family history and his research paid off. His Cabernet was unpretentious and clever, with jammy supple fruit to which its name was well suited.
John is second generation wine grower and winemaker, so his roots run deep. He consulted with Rob Lloyd whom was winemaker at La Crema and Rombauer, and knows a little something about Chardonnay, and created a full throttle, voluptuous Chardonnay with the hedonistic buttery character that California is famous for.
Butter was born in 2010, and what started as a thousand case venture has turned into a monster of a brand, growing to more than 800,000 cases this year with no end in sight. It took a little coaxing initially to get patrons on board, but its winning formula has shattered all expectations.
As one would deduce, the wine is tropical, fleshy, flamboyant and yes, buttery, with a sweet lingering finish that lends well to quiche, seafood or poultry with a tropical salsa.
