A Wine for All Seasons: Maggio Zinfandel Old Vine
posted on July 5th, 2017 by Sara Trujillo
We like to call Zinfandel a “wine for all seasons”. It can pair beautifully with any holiday feast put before it, and yet has the big, robust fruit layers to handle hot weather climes when sweet, supple tannins are desired. The aromas right off the glass are graced with a bouquet of dark berries – blackberry, black cherry and rich juicy plums. Upon first sip, a slight licorice and blackberry compote develops, backed by an unmistakable vanilla oak, balanced acidity and a kick of brown sugar. A fantastic palate from start to finish. Pair with grilled lamb, peppered steak, pizza, burgers, and our own handmade grilled sausages.
Maggio is produced at the Oak Ridge Winery, the oldest operating winery in Lodi, California. Built in 1934, it is owned by the Maggio, Reynolds and Dondero families, and produces estate wines under several separate wine labels. The winery itself was once a winemaking cooperative, which the Maggio and Reynolds families purchased in 2002. They had a vision that went well beyond dusting off a piece of local history. They renamed it Oak Ridge Winery and began by modernizing the facilities, transforming it into a state-of-the-art winery.
