Wine Thursday: 2016 Department 66 Vin de Pays des Cotes Catalanes “Fragile” Rose

posted on January 18th, 2018 by Leslie Thomas

A guise of pale rhubarb saturates the glass in a provocative way. Tempting floral aromatics are evident with rose hips and crushed petals that frame a candied, summer berry core. Opening with tenacity, ripe, wild strawberries prevail along with mandarin orange, juicy watermelon, and a pleasing mid-palate of tangy, white peach. These flavors are buttressed with warm stone accents compliments of the volcanic soils the grapes hail from and a snap of mouthwatering acidity. Predominantly a blend of Grenache with a dollop of Syrah and Carignane

Fragile Rosé is imported by the Orin Swift company and its founder, Dave Phinney, who is the mind behind The Prisoner. Inspired by the venerable wines of the southern Mediterranean, it is made utilizing traditional methods and using sixty to one-hundred-year-old vines. The domain offers very low yield s due in large part to a particular micro-climate, prevailing mountain winds from the Pyrenees mountain range and the famous black, schist soils.
