Bristol’s Own Easter Bag

by Michael Cristillo, Wine Buyer
Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

Bristol's Own Easter BagEaster is a moveable feast, meaning it is not fixed in relation to the civil calendar. The date of Easter therefore varies between March 22 and April 25. The exact origins of this religious feast day’s name are unknown, although some sources claim the word Easter is derived from Eostre, a Teutonic goddess of spring and fertility. Easter is really an entire season of the Christian church year, as opposed to a single-day observance. Lent, the 40-day period leading up to Easter Sunday, is a time of reflection and penance and represents the 40 days that Jesus spent alone in the wilderness before starting his ministry, a time in which Christians believe he survived various temptations by the devil. The day before Lent, known as Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday, is a last hurrah of food and fun before the fasting begins. As with Christmas, over the centuries, various folk customs and pagan traditions, such as decorating Easter eggs, egg hunting, the Easter Bunny, and the consumption of jelly beans and marshmallow chicks have become a standard part of this holiday.  And to continue this festive observance, we offer our own Easter treat with this tote bag filled with seasonal treats; a plush Easter Bunny with Carrot, Easter Jelly Beans Cottage Lane, Easter Tootsie Rolls fruit flavors in a pillow box, an Easter Chewy Lemonhead & Friends Assorted Flavors Candy Box and of course, a Willy Wonka Lik-M-Aid Fun Dip Razzle Apple treat.  And as an added treat – unlike most baskets that are forgotten afterwards – the kids get to use their tote bag for other enjoyable uses.

Holiday Gift Baskets at Bristol Farms

holiday gift basketsWhen you mention the holidays of Fall and Winter, one of the many images that come to mind are the festively decorated gift baskets that accompany everything from office parties and employee gifts to Christmas trees and family get-togethers. Historically, baskets were woven using the most appropriate materials that could be sourced locally (coincidentally, something we proudly cultivate at Bristol Farms). Gatherers used baskets for collecting fruit and other food while the hunters made use of them to store their catch of the day. This may explain the modern day use of baskets as gift bearers, particularly since gift baskets originally served the purpose of presenting organic gifts such as fruit, flowers and other types of perishables.

Another concept dates back to the Biblical account of three-month old baby Moses hidden among the reeds by the riverbank in a basket made of bulrushes. This theory could be one way of explaining the advent of baby gift baskets and the various other types of gift baskets that abound.

Today, it is not unusual to come across such baskets being offered for every possible contemporary holiday or event, even sympathy baskets for those who have just lost a loved one.

In our modern world, wine connoisseurs might appreciate the gift basket bursting with fruits of the vine. Whereas lovers of fine food would surely cherish a gourmet basket brimming with foie gras, caviar and smoked salmon. Chocolate fanatics might salivate at the thought of a basket stuffed with Ghirardelli and Godiva morsels. Those with a more tempered, down to earth liking may fancy a selection of designer teas, coffees and cookies. No matter what kind of food, wine or confection you are fond of, chances are there is a Bristol Farms gift basket that will exceed your every wish and desire.

Festive Easter Baskets

by Michael Cristillo, Wine Buyer
Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

It has been estimated that around 90% of children in the US receive some form of a bountiful, gift-filled Easter basket during the holiday season, a tradition that has existed for quite some time.  Spring is a period of blessing and rebirth – the fertility goddess Eostre (a Germanic entity whose Anglo-Saxon month, Ēostur-monath, is the namesake for the festival we call Easter) was sometimes depicted carrying a basket of eggs. And it was traditional to take baskets of early seedlings to temples to increase the chance of a good harvest. The Easter basket was especially popular in the countries of central and Eastern Europe and was most likely imported to America in the 18th century by the same German settlers who introduced the Easter bunny.  As such, we have two Easter baskets that should tickle the cockles of your children’s heart for this festive occasion.
