In Season – Ojai Pixie Tangerines!

posted on March 8th, 2016 by Keith Tsuchiyama

As my friend George says to me almost every day during Pixie season, “Sweet, petite, and easy to eat… tastes like sunshine. The one and only Pixie tangerine!” Now, I’m not sure where he came up with his catch phrase, but I do have to admit, he’s definitely on to something. Ojai Pixie tangerines are now in stores! Bristol Farms is proud to offer this sweet variety of locally grown tangerines from the Ojai Valley. Savor the tasty, delicate treat of tree-ripened fruit bursting with sunshine-sweet flavor and juice. The Pixie tangerine is a uniquely sweet and delicious variety that requires a bit of knowledge and experience to grow well. The Ojai Pixie Growers Association was formed to share information about growing this finicky crop. Tips on everything from pruning, fertilizing, harvesting, selling, and cooking with Ojai Pixies are shared among members to improve their crops year after year. In 1979 there were two Pixie trees in the Ojai Valley. Today the Pixie Growers… Read More

Stilton Cheese with Lemon Zest

posted on February 25th, 2015 by Carl Smith

Stilton Cheese with Lemon Zest - there's no better cheese to feature during our Citrus 101 promotion going on in-store through March 24th. Smooth, sweet white Stilton is delicately enhanced with fine pieces of zesty lemon. It is a medium flavored cheese made with pasteurized cow's milk, and has easily become a favorite with the winning combination of the mild of white Stilton and the zing of citrus peel. It is deliciously served with a good Sauvignon Blanc. Stilton cheeses have been granted the status of a protected designation of origin by the European Commission - two of only ten British cheeses currently produced to have such protection. The P.D.O. status requires that only cheese produced in the three counties of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, and Nottinghamshire, and made according to a strict code may be called "Stilton". Stilton with Lemon Zest is great to snack on, but is wonderful incorporated into many recipes, such as the Lemon Cheesecake below.   Lemon… Read More
