Wine Thursdays: Fattoria Del Cerro Rosso di Montepulciano

posted on July 27th, 2017 by Leslie Thomas

Fattoria Del Cerro Rosso di Montepulciano is a blend of Prugnolo Gentile (Sangiovese) and Mammolo, from a vineyard of Pliocene origin with mostly clay with stones and shells on the soil. The wine went through alcoholic fermentation for 5-7 days, followed by another eight days of fermentation on the skins. 70% of the wine aged in Slavonian oak casks for six months and 30% ages in French oak barriques for six months. The wine is bottle refined for three months. The result is a vivid ruby red colored wine with intense aromas of wild black cherry, violet and a subtle vanilla undertone on the nose. The full-bodied palate is elegant and well balanced with robust tannins. Pair it with first course dishes with meat sauces, stuffed pasta or casserole dishes and grilled red meats. Fattoria Del Cerro was founded in 1922 by the Baiocchi family and the estate quickly became an established part of the Montepulciano wine making community. Back in 1978 it was acquired by Saiagricola and emerged… Read More

National Scotch Day is July 27: Take 25% Off Scotch One Day Only!

posted on July 26th, 2017 by Leslie Thomas

National Scotch Day is Tomorrow, July 27! We're celebrating this awesome drinking holiday with 25% off our entire Scotch whisky selection. Some Scotch basics... Scotch Whisky is a collection of grain based beverages distilled in Scotland. Most are produced from malted barley, although corn is used in some, which post distillation is aged in oak casks for a desired length of time. The Single Malt Whisky, the ultimate connoisseurs dram, is 100% malted barley, from a single distillery. Age statements range from 8 years to the elusive and incredibly rare 50 yr, which can exceed the price of an automobile. Scotch "sipping rules" that should always be obeyed... Scotch whisky should be served at room temp, not chilled, not with ice, just with a drop or two of water, if this is too aggressive, add water to taste, but in small increments, you can’t undo what you did. Serve in a snifter or a tulip glass, not a cut glass tumbler or an old fashioned. Slowly let the whisky… Read More

Moderately light cherry red color in the glass, the robust fruit flavors of Bing cherry with added nuances of bramble and spice leads to a mid-weight, wild strawberry core touched by oak. Everything’s Better with Butter

posted on May 11th, 2017 by Sara Trujillo

First you start with JaM and then you add a little Butter. Well that’s how it began for John and Michelle Truchard (JaM is their initials), who launched a small project in 2009 that was geared to getting rich luscious wines in the hands of thirsty patrons for under $20. The field was crowded, but John’s family history and his research paid off. His Cabernet was unpretentious and clever, with jammy supple fruit to which its name was well suited. John is second generation wine grower and winemaker, so his roots run deep. He consulted with Rob Lloyd whom was winemaker at La Crema and Rombauer, and knows a little something about Chardonnay, and created a full throttle, voluptuous Chardonnay with the hedonistic buttery character that California is famous for.  Butter was born in 2010, and what started as a thousand case venture has turned into a monster of a brand, growing to more than 800,000 cases this year with no end in sight. It took a little coaxing initially to get patrons… Read More
