John Clark - CLARK FARMS
John Clark is a third generation farmer from Exeter, California. He and his wife, Becky, grow citrus fruit on the family farm started by John’s father and grandfather in 1950. John joined the family business after receiving his bachelor’s degree in agriculture from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 1976. In the years since, the operation has grown to 450 acres of fruit and nut crops, including three varieties of Satsuma Mandarins. The Exeter area, near the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains is well known for its quality citrus. “Just enough frost to color the fruit”, Clark said. “And the heavier soils of our hillside groves produce a quality product.”

“We started with the first planting of Owari variety”, he said. Owari is a traditional variety that ripens fully in December, but we needed something a little earlier. Okitsu Wase variety filled that need. A November variety, it’s still totally seedless and peels so easily that even little kids can do it on their own.”

The last planting is a cultivar released by the University of California simply designated China S9. “We’re really excited about it” Clark said. “Ripening in October, early examples show signs of fantastic flavor.”

In summary Clark said, “Farming isn’t always easy but I wouldn’t trade it for any other occupation. Growing things I love to eat myself makes for a pretty great life.”
