The buzz about George’s Raw Honey is well deserved. If you think all honey is pretty much the same, one taste of this pure, unfiltered goodness will change your mind.

It’s all thanks to the hard work of founder George Khatchikian, a third-generation beekeeper based in the Coachella Valley. His family-run bee business harvests 100% organic wildflower combs without wax foundation to produce some of the most heavenly honey we’ve ever had.

Recently, we caught up with George to learn more about his unique story and hear his advice for fellow entrepreneurs.

01 Why did you start George’s Raw Honey?

My grandfather was a well-known beekeeper in Armenia who pioneered the craft. His techniques produced an exquisite, widely-loved honey that was rich in both texture and flavor. These methods were passed down to my father, who passed them down to me, allowing us to continue the family tradition.

Today, I honor my grandfather by recreating his honey here in the Coachella Valley with my own hives. When I work with my bees and harvest the honey, I feel inspired by my family’s legacy. I also feel grateful for the opportunity to share my honey with the people of America.

02 What obstacles did you face along the way?

There are so many challenges involved with the actual work of beekeeping. Extracting and saving hives. Finding a good home for the hives. Dealing with the uncertainties of Mother Nature and the weather. The list goes on.

We also have Africanized bees in our hives. They’re notoriously tough to work with, but they’re worth it because they are extremely active and constantly producing honey. In 2015, they were on the verge of extinction, so I’m glad that we’re doing our part to help save them.

Despite the obstacles, working with the bees every day allows me to feel connected with nature. I really do enjoy it – killer bees and all!

03 What lessons do you have for other entrepreneurs?

As an entrepreneur, your business is your baby. No one understands it the way you do. Just because another person doesn’t understand your idea doesn’t mean it won’t work. Hardly anyone understands how electricity works, yet people take it for granted and use it every day!

Also, it’s crucial to surround yourself with people that believe in you and support your passion.

04 What’s on the horizon for George’s Raw Honey?

I’m constantly experimenting to create new and unique honeys for our growing collection. Honey has been around for over 8,000 years – you’d think there wouldn’t be anything left to innovate, but we’re always coming up with something fresh.

Right now, we’re working on a brand new technique to produce “untouched” honey. To do this, we install containers inside the hive and let the bee colony construct its own honey. It may sound easy, but those bees have a mind of their own and they don’t always cooperate. So far, I’m really happy with our progress. Soon, we hope to offer this incredible untouched honey to our local customers.

05 How do you keep work/life balance? What drives/inspires you?

I believe that if you love what you do, your personal life and your work will blend together, creating a seamless union between the two. That’s the definition of success: A natural balance between your profession and your life outside of work.

I’m constantly inspired by my family. I can never forget their legacy. From my grandfather in Armenia to my father here in America, they motivate me to accomplish my goals and set new ones every day.
