Meet the Founder: Rebecca Finell of Zip Top
Rebecca Finell launched her first business venture just one week after her college graduation. With a degree in industrial design and an unbelievable work ethic, she invented a host of products to solve everyday problems with style. The only thing Rebecca doesn’t know how to do is take a vacation day.
In 2018, Rebecca launched Zip Top, her game-changing line of reusable platinum silicone containers. They’re not just eco-friendly, they’re people-friendly. Zip Top containers are non-toxic, impossibly light, endlessly reusable, and still tough enough for the microwave, dishwasher, and freezer. No plastic, yucky odors, or nasty chemicals – just a high-quality storage solution made from an abundant natural resource.
Through crowdfunding, Rebecca raised over $2 million from roughly 20,000 backers. Now, Zip Top is helping to save both food and the planet.
Recently, we caught up with Rebecca to learn more about her story and hear her advice for fellow entrepreneurs.
01 Why did you start Zip Top?
I wanted to bring eco-friendly into the future and create something that everyone would want to use, whether they cared about the environment or not. I started Zip Top because I wanted to create something that made food storage easy and clean while also being better for the environment.
02 What obstacles did you face along the way?
Unfortunately, intellectual property theft has been our biggest challenge. Zip Top is patented around the world and we will continue to fight to ensure consumers receive the real Zip Top containers that work and are made with 100% platinum silicone.
03 What lessons do you have for other entrepreneurs?
- Trust your gut, but back it up with solid research.
- Raise four times what you think you will need in capital.
- Surround yourself with people that you want to be around.
04 What’s on the horizon for Zip Top?
We just launched the first ever reusable breast milk bag! We are also starting to export to several new countries, including Canada, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and Mexico. We’re really excited to see Zip Top in all different parts of the world.
05 How do you keep work/life balance? What drives/inspires you?
Well right now, I’m working from home, and that allows me to be around my family a lot more. I love it!
Creating products that make a difference drives me. And I’m continually inspired by the kindness of everyday people.
