Spice It Up: Turmeric

Turmeric is a relative of ginger, and like its root cousin, it has long been hailed for not only its flavor, but its health benefits. Although turmeric blooms into a full plant, the root is its most prized possession – gorgeous and golden, it has been used as a spice, a color dye, and a medicine for centuries.
Today, we know that turmeric’s health benefits stem from curcumin. Studies have shown it can be helpful in fighting inflammation, arthritis, and joint pain. Turmeric also may help to increase brain function and antioxidant capacity in the body. If you want to harness the concentrated power of turmeric, check out the selection of turmeric supplements and powders in our Natural Living department.
Healing properties aside, turmeric brings a powerful punch of fragrant flavor and intensely deep color to a number of dishes. The warm and earthy taste shines in curries, marinades, sauces, and more. Just remember: Turmeric’s dyeing power is no joke, so be sure to wash your hands frequently and keep it off your clothes while cooking.
