Meet the Founder: Bill Moses of Flying Embers
In 2017, a massive wildfire threatened to wipe out thousands of homes and businesses in the Ojai Valley. A single ember could have ended Bill Moses’ groundbreaking botanical brewery. Instead, this challenging period sparked the beginning of Flying Embers.
After three long days of fighting the inferno with friends and neighbors, Bill was left with a profound sense of gratitude for his community. Feeling equally exhausted and inspired, he vowed to empower first responders and everyday people.
Every hard kombucha and seltzer from Flying Embers is carefully crafted to illuminate life’s most precious moments. With a blend of fruit, flora, sweet, heat, fermented adaptogens, and ancient traditions, it’s one of our favorite good-for-you go-tos. And, when wildfires arise, Flying Embers provides shelter and critical supplies to those in need. Earlier this year, they donated more than $50,000 to those affected in California.
Recently, Bill took time out from his busy schedule to tell us more about his journey and share his advice for fellow entrepreneurs.
01 Why did you start Flying Embers?
I wanted to crack the code on a better-for-you alcohol. I wanted to do something that had never been done before — craft a libation with healthy ingredients that actually matter.
At the same time, I was determined to help the brave men and women who were risking everything to protect our community. The 2017 wildfire season was terrifying, but it also was a reminder of our resilience. Our local heroes helped us that year and every year since then, and we’re happy to do whatever we can to support them.
02 What obstacles did you face along the way?
In terms of our product, the main obstacle was to make a delicious hard kombucha with zero grams of sugar. We spent almost two years in the research and development phase before we perfected our fermentation process. With select strains of cultivated bacteria and yeast — plus long days in the laboratory — we achieved our mission. These days, our biggest challenge is producing enough to satisfy the ever-growing demand.
03 What lessons do you have for other entrepreneurs?
Never give up. Never surrender. Pitch your tent and stay in it, no matter the strength of the winds or the downpour of obstacles. Work hard, keep the faith, and don’t second guess yourself on your quest to fulfill your vision.
04 What’s on the horizon for Flying Embers?
Flying Embers always strives to lead and disrupt the hard beverage market with innovative products, like our hard kombucha. We also plan to continue to activate business as a force for good to better serve our consumers. Our goal is to provide a better-for-you alcohol that doesn’t take away from active lifestyles. We want to help you celebrate life’s most precious moments while supporting you on your wellness journey.
05 How do you keep work/life balance? What drives/inspires you?
Spending time with my kids keeps me balanced and grounded. My children are my North Star — they remind me that there’s more to life than work.
I’m driven by my mission to serve the world with the best possible product. Ultimately, it’s all about providing the best experience possible. That’s why my commitment and my attention-to-detail has never wavered, and it never will.
