Spice it Up: Sesame


All across Asia, farmers harvest the seeds we love from the pods of sesame plants. The white seeds are sweet and nutty, while the black seeds are slightly bitter and more intense in flavor. Fun fact: the only difference between black and white sesame seeds is the protective hull! The white variety is the delicious inner kernel. Both are made more aromatic with a light toasting. The flavor lends itself to savory and sweet dishes alike.

Sesame seeds are as nutritious as they are tasty. Filled with proteins, fiber, and healthy fats, they make the perfect addition to most dishes. Sprinkle some on your salads, add them to your smoothies, and use to top your favorite macrobiotic bowls!

Sesame Chicken Wings

1/2 cup soy sauce
1/3 cup water
1/4 cup sugar
2 tablespoons sesame oil
4 green onions with tops, rinsed, dried, trimmed, and sliced
1/2 medium onion, peeled and sliced
2 garlic cloves, peeled and minced
2 tablespoons sesame seeds
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
3 lbs. chicken wings

1. Combine soy sauce, water, sugar, sesame oil, onion, garlic, salt, and pepper in a glass baking dish. Add chicken wings and thoroughly coat. Cover and refrigerate for 2 to 3 hours, occasionally turning to ensure an even coating.
2. Remove chicken to a shallow rack in a baking pan; discard marinade.
3. Sprinkle evenly with sesame seeds.
4. Bake, uncovered, at 350°F for 30 minutes. Turn and bake an additional 20 minutes longer or until wings are tender and fully cooked.
5. Top with sliced green onions, and enjoy!
