Meet the Founders: Debbie, Jack, and Meghan Dowd of Cado Avocado Ice Cream

Debbie, Jack, and Meghan Dowd of Cado Avocado Ice Cream

A lifelong commitment to healthy living inspired the Dowd family to reinvent their favorite frozen dessert. Harnessing the nutritional benefits of one of nature’s mightiest superfoods, they substituted cold-pressed avocado oil for ice cream’s traditional milk fats. The end result: a dreamy, creamy, dairy-free delight that satisfies the sweet tooth and packs a wallop with a wealth of heart-healthy properties.

Loaded with monounsaturated fat, avocado creates the smooth and velvety texture we expect from traditional ice cream. Flavors like Vanilla Bean and Mint Chocolate Chip tempt your tastebuds, and are made with organic ingredients sourced from all over the globe. And just in time for summer, watch for the newest addition to their offerings—ice cream sandwiches!

Recently, we caught up with Meghan to learn more about her journey and hear her advice for fellow entrepreneurs.

1. Why did you start Cado?

We believe coming together with family and friends over food and drink should be a life-enhancing experience. Growing up, ice cream was a staple in our house, but over time, we noticed our favorite ice creams were being made with cheaper ingredients, fillers and fluff. As our appreciation for plant-based eating grew, we were inspired to create a frozen dessert that captured the creamy taste of ice cream but with better, more wholesome ingredients. By utilizing the good fat found in avocado, we developed a game-changing frozen treat that redefines the ice cream experience.

2. What obstacles did you face along the way?

Facing obstacles is part of any growth process—and we’ve faced plenty!

One challenge we’ve faced is educating people that, while our product is made from avocado, Cado doesn’t taste like avocado. Developing a strong social media strategy along with frequent in-store promotions has helped encourage consumers to take a chance on something unique and try Cado for the first time.

3. What lessons do you have for other entrepreneurs?

Most entrepreneurs are prepared to wear many hats, and that adaptability is a real asset. While you can’t do it all alone, staying resourceful and scrappy for as long as possible can be a competitive advantage. Hiring more people or spending more money doesn’t guarantee success. No one will approach your brand with the same entrepreneurial spirit that you have, so stay hands-on and connected to all facets as you grow.

4. What’s on the horizon for Cado?

After launching our ice cream sandwiches last year, we’re excited to roll out more novelty items in the coming months. As we continue to grow and innovate, we look forward to introducing even more people to Cado!

5. How do you keep work/life balance? What drives/inspires you?

It’s always a work in progress, but we prioritize a healthy work/life balance by focusing on good nutrition, regular exercise, and getting enough rest. There’s a trail next to our office and some of our best meetings happen while we’re out walking together. Family is at the heart of everything we do, so we make a conscious effort to leave work at the office and be fully present at home. This helps us nurture our relationships and recharge.
