Meet the Founders Rambler Sparkling Water

When Austin-based co-founders Dave, James, and Jeff realized they were drinking a lot of sparkling water, most of it bottled far from home, they saw an opportunity. Why not create something local. Something more responsible. Something that gave back.

Rambler was built on three guiding principles: local sourcing, sustainability, and community impact.

Instead of pulling from fragile natural springs, the team starts with municipal water from Texas public utilities, which already meets EPA drinking standards. It is then refined through Texas limestone filtration and reverse osmosis, creating a clean base for Rambler’s proprietary blend of calcium, magnesium, and potassium. Working with a local brewery, they fine-tune the mineral balance and carbonation to achieve a crisp, lively finish.

By relying on responsibly managed public water systems, Rambler helps protect more vulnerable natural resources. The commitment extends beyond the can. As the only American-made sparkling water with a formal give-back program, Rambler partners with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation and American Rivers to support conservation efforts and protect waterways for future generations.

The 12-ounce cans carry a distinctly Texan nostalgia, with retro graphics and the familiar feel of a classic beer can in hand. Inside, the flavor is clean, bright, and refreshing. Spirited yet alcohol-free, Rambler fits just as easily into a backyard gathering as it does alongside a beautifully set table.

Available in Original, Cranberry, Lemon-Lime, and Wild Cherry. No sodium. No sugar. No calories.

Recently, we caught up with Dave, James, and Jeff to learn more about their journey and hear their advice for fellow entrepreneurs.

1. Why did you start Rambler Sparkling Water?

We started Rambler because most sparkling water felt empty—loud packaging, lots of flavors, but not much behind it. People were clearly looking for something better to drink every day, not just something different.

So, in 2018 we made the water we actually wanted in our fridge: American-made, mineral-rich, clean, and useful—in a killer package that worked at the bar, in the car, or with friends and family. Rambler started with a simple idea: make it better, add something back in. Real limestone minerals. Balanced carbonation. No gimmicks. Great can.

What began as a Texas alternative to Topo Chico has grown into one of the fastest-growing sparkling water brands in the country, now available nationwide and proudly supporting American Rivers. The goal hasn’t changed: make water that pulls its weight and one that trades on quality and taste, not just markdowns.

2. What obstacles did you face along the way?

The category was crowded, and shelf space was brutal. We had to prove we weren’t just another flavor in a shiny can—that people actually wanted something with more substance.

It’s also a capital-intensive business, and building Rambler through unpredictable economic cycles hasn’t been easy. There were plenty of moments when it would’ve been faster to chase trends or get louder. We didn’t. That restraint made the road harder—but the brand stronger.

3. What lessons do you have for other entrepreneurs?

Be patient. Brands aren’t built overnight—they’re earned over time. You’re going to make mistakes, hear “no” a lot, and get tested constantly.

The real work is knowing what not to do and surrounding yourself with the right people. Teamwork, trust, and persistence matter more than any single idea.

4. What’s on the horizon for Rambler Sparkling Water?

We’re focused on becoming America’s everyday sparkling mineral water. That means fewer distractions, not more—doubling down on quality, distribution, and long-term trust rather than chasing every new trend.

Sometimes innovation isn’t about adding something new. It’s about doing the important things better.

5. How do you keep work/life balance? What drives/inspires you?

We’re building something useful, something substantial. Something simple that fits into real life—after a workout, with dinner, on the road trip, or instead of another drink you don’t need.

When the product is honest, the work doesn’t feel forced. We’re not trying to be flashy. We’re just ramblin’—and trying to do it right.
